Save-A-Mutt has been giving vulnerable dogs a second chance since 2014, originally pulling from high-kill shelters. Now we work in many at-risk communities. We focus on compassionate, long-term solutions – most notably a “last litter” program for mother dogs. These mom dogs safely raise one final litter before being spayed, helping prevent the cycle of repeated, unwanted pregnancies. The puppies are lovingly raised by our fosters, vetted, and adopted into homes, while the mother dogs stays with their family. Of course, this costs a great deal of money. With fundraisers, adoptions and donations we save hundreds of dogs each year. These puppies become **Hero Dogs**, their adoption fees go back into the fund for rescuing more dogs and covering costs for both medical cases and senior dogs – making them Heroes! **“It takes a long time for a soul to become this sweet.”** That’s what we think about our Senior dogs. Save-A-Mutt is working with our community help prevent unplanned litters, ensure that every animal has a forever home and that we reduce the number of animals entering the shelter system. With our Last Litter Program, Mom dogs will be spayed, and if needed, vaccinated and microchipped FREE of charge. Once weaned, puppies will be placed in foster homes and later adopted out. Their adoption fees help pay for the all the care for mommy and the litter of pup! Her story has inspired us to name our new senior fundraising project “Emma’s Fund.” The money we raise for this fund will be dedicated to providing medical testing and services, grooming, specialized food and supplies to the senior dogs in our care. We will always remember Emma and the impact that she made on us.* **Emma’s Story** – Emma was picked up by animal control as a stray. She was taken to the local animal shelter, and waited for her family to find her…. they never did. In the beginning, Emma was deemed unadoptable because of a growth on her foot, it appeared to be a very involved tumor, possibly cancer. When Elizabeth saw Emma at the shelter, she knew that Save-A-Mutt could be Emma’s voice, and using our resources, get her a new home. Surgery was performed, the tumor removed and this sweet girl was ready for a new life. The perfect home was found for Emma, she became a cherished member of someone’s family… her dreams were coming true. Sadly, just a few months later, our sweet Emma was diagnosed with a very advanced form of terminal bone cancer. She lost her battle with cancer but not before leaving her mark on the hearts of everyone who knew her. And although her time with her new family was short, she was able to experience more love and joy in those few months than most of us experience in a lifetime. We are proud to have senior dog rescue partners that share our love of these ‘experienced’ gray muzzled beauties. Their never ending support enables us work together as a team to make a difference in the lives of homeless animal. We are forever grateful for this collaboration. ## Help us put an end to Puppy Mills ~ Adopt, don’t shop! Our organization was created because of our sadness with the business of puppy mills. Unfortunately, a whole new crop of backyard/hobby breeders has created more issues for the rescue community – selling puppies to pet stores, selling puppies online/Craig’s List, even selling them with hand written signs by the side of the road. People continue to buy them, thinking they are “saving” the puppy. If we stop the demand – the supply will end! Save-A-Mutt works daily to provide education about the horrors of the puppy mill environment and the ignorance behind backyard breeding. We would like Washington State to follow the example of many cities in California – ban the sale of puppies and kittens in retail locations. That is our goal! **What can you do?** Don’t buy a single item – not a leash, not a bag food – at any pet store that SELLS puppies or kittens. Do not be fooled, just because a Pet Store uses the word adoption, they are still **buying** puppies to sell to the public. You can also take a few minutes each day to visit your local Craig’s List online ads and flag anyone selling puppies. We are working with area shelters and rescue groups to stop this horrible practice, stay tuned. After an Oprah show about puppy mills in 2008, two friends went to lunch and asked each other a question… “How can we do more?” A pet-sitter and a graphic designer who wanted to give more – more money, more time, more than they could give by themselves – to support their passion, dogs! They weren’t alone. After a bit of brainstorming, a fundraising dog wash just seemed like a fun idea. And isn’t ‘fun’ part of fundraising? They shared their idea with friends and family and the idea grew. Everyone wanted to help. So they turned to their community, looking for sponsors, and again, everyone wanted to help. The idea was now more than an idea, it was an event – a yearly event to raise money for dog based charities in their neighborhood. After the first few years of the dog wash, meeting amazing rescues and shelters, the ‘rescue’ bug took hold. Elizabeth had already been fostering senior dogs and had a grasp on that end of the rescue world. Jennifer began working with a few area rescues, learning about high kill, out of state shelters, and how transport works. Today, Save-A-Mutt is a full fledged 501c3 rescue that saves hundreds of animals each year. They work to find forever homes for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. ‘Fun’draising is still very much a part of their organization, but now they work with an amazing team of board members, volunteers, fosters and rescue partners. ### Our Future Scrub-A-Mutt’s first annual dog-washing fundraiser was on Sunday, August 17, 2008. The newspaper got the date wrong. Nobody knew where the park was. Yet, they washed 25 dogs that day, and made over $1000. Over the years, the numbers of dogs washed increased. At the last official Scrub event, the volunteers washed over 300 dogs – it was amazing. In 2014, Scrub-A-Mutt became Save-A-Mutt and we transformed from a fundraising group, to a rescue/dog saving organization. Our many relationships with sponsors, volunteers and the other “crazy dog people” in our community made the transition easy. In 2019, Save-A-Mutt installed a board of directors, while Jennifer and Elizabeth stepped back as Executive Directors. The purpose was to give SAM new blood and help with new growth, allowing Jenn and Elizabeth focus on their passion of rescue. We are a currently a foster based dog rescue, with an occasional cat too. And when she interviewed Elizabeth in 1999 to be her pet sitter – the seed of friendship was planted. Little did they both know – how that friendship would take them to great places in the world of pet rescue. A move to 15 acres allows more fostering of many litters of puppies, dogs requiring quarantine or isolation, and even special needs care. It was the relationship with her customer Jennifer, now a treasured friend, and a shared love of the animals that created Scrub-A-Mutt. Elizabeth is the heart behind Scrub-A-Mutt’s devotion to rescue. She began fostering dogs for Old Dog Haven (ODH) in September of 2008, and quickly became a beloved “foster failure.” Elizabeth is a “mom” to several senior dogs – but she can be found trolling the local shelters looking to save even more of these gray muzzled beauties. She is also “mom” to some special rescue cats. The most important part of Elizabeth’s circle is her family. As a member of the Save-a-Mutt Board, Kimberly is able to contribute to the rescue community, working with a team of people who are passionate about finding homes for homeless dogs. It didn’t take long them to become besties, and for Eileen to learn about Save-a-Mutt. Fast forward, and Eileen now lives on the Farm with Jenn and Greg. She is involved pretty much all aspects of the organization and fills in where ever needed – helping with foster dogs, running errands, volunteering at events and more. She has always had a love for animals and has owned dozens, including pet chickens, rabbits, horses, snakes, fish, spiders, cats and dogs. Currently, she is mom to Drake, (Jennifer’s Pitbull ‘rehab’ dog) and Kimber (OUR foster fail), as well as the bonus mom to Jenn’s dogs Graham and Zobel; the resident cats Willow and Chaos; and many chickens and pigs. Eileen is also a licensed small animal massage therapist, dog sitter and ‘Jill of Many Trades.’ ### JJ Nicholson ~ Board Member, Event Coordinator JJ’s involvement with Save-A-Mutt has always been a family affair. She would come to Scrub-A-Mutt events where her sisters were volunteers. Her little sister became a permanent foster parent in 2014 and JJ fell in love with helping, but she worked full time away from home, so she started fostering for Save-A-Mutt on a as needed for emergency placement. In 2015 she started working from home and became a foster parent on a regular basis. Her amazing family and dog pack of 4 (two of which are foster fails) have helped foster hundreds of puppies (okay feels like hundreds) and a few kittens. Other than adorable animals JJ’s other passion is her family. If she ever turns down a Save-A-Mutt event it’s for her adorable nieces (who have been fostering since the day, they were born… literally) and handsome nephew. She joined the board late in 2022 and is now in process learning the ropes of Events to be able to take over as the Event Coordinator for Jennifer. We can’t wait to see what the future holds. ### Brynn Norton ~ Board Member Brynn joined Save-A-Mutt in early 2020 and became a board member in late 2022. She is passionate about the community that SAM has built — one where adopters, volunteers, and fosters all feel supported, connected, and proud to be part of something bigger. Over the years, Brynn and her family have opened their home to countless dogs in need, from squishy little puppies to seniors and complex medical cases. Fostering has become a core part of her family’s life and a mission she deeply believes in. Brynn is a mom to two wonderful kids, Haylee and Kyler, as well as a small crew of beloved pets: Sadie (a cherished foster fail), Chewy, Coyo (another happy foster fail!), and her cat crew, Tommy, David, and Lannee — also a foster fail. Jane was a volunteer at that first annual dog-washing fundraiser back in August 2008, and she has been with Save-A-Mutt ever since. Jane shares Elizabeth Woche’s passion for the Senior dogs and helps Elizabeth on the Senior Foster side of Save-A-Mutt. Jane also helps manage the Swag tables at our Save-A-Mutt events. In addition, Jane and her wife Michele are Save-A-Mutt Fosters, though they have been Foster Fails more often than not! ### William Woche ~ Board Member As the heir to the Save-A-Mutt senior dog program, William has a vested interest in seeing the longevity of such an illustrious and spectacular rescue organization cemented across eons. As a young pup, William remembers being a part of all the great work Save-A-Mutt (then just a dog wash in the summer) had been doing. He understood that Jennifer & Elizabeth (aka Mom) were committed wholeheartedly to their vision, but that it would also take the help of many ‘humble servants’ to realize their dream. From then on, William has taken part in most of the outreach events, and plans on continuing to do so as long as he is able. Previous Next ### Foster Requirements The foster home represents that no member of its household (permanent or temporary) has been charged with cruelty to animals. The foster home agrees to accept the following conditions and restrictions in order to be eligible as a foster home for Save-A-Mutt (SAM). In order to foster for SAM, adult members of the household (i.e. partners, spouses, children 18 and over) must agree to the conditions found within this contract. Experience\*The foster home represents that it has a reasonable working knowledge of the proper care and humane treatment of animals. I agree Daily Care\*The foster home agrees to provide the foster animals with sufficient food, water, exercise, socialization, obedience training, competent vet care as scheduled by SAM (including transport to the vet), prompt vet care in case of illness or accident, and medications as prescribed (if necessary). The foster home will also provide the care and attention necessary to ensure the animal adapts to their new temporary home. Obedience training and crate training may be just a few of the tools necessary to help the foster adjust. I agree Reimbursement\*The foster home will be reimbursed for any medical, training or other previously approved expenses that may occur during the foster period. Payment will be made to the foster home by SAM. All foster homes will provide legitimate receipts for proof of payment to SAM and fill out any forms required to receive payment. Any routine or ordinary expense will require pre-approval prior to treatment. In an emergency situation, the foster home must notify an SAM representative at the earliest possible time. Foster homes are NOT reimbursed for food, toys, treats and crates. Those items may be available at no cost to the foster family upon request. I agree Housing Requirements\*No SAM animal will be left outside at night, tied out unattended or placed in any situation where physical harm could come to them. The foster home agrees to give the foster dog proper exercise (whether in a fenced area or on a leash) to maintain its health. All foster cats must be kept indoors. If the foster animal is lost or stolen, the foster home will immediately notify SAM and assist in attempts to recover the animal. I agree Health/Temperament\*The foster home understands that SAM may have limited knowledge of the health or temperament of the foster animal and agrees that it will hold SAM (and any other entity affiliated with SAM, i.e. volunteers, animal hospitals and their staff, etc.) harmless in the event the foster animal is responsible for any injury, property damage, illness (including spread to other pets within the household) or for any harm to any person(s) who may come in contact with the foster animal while it is under the care of you as a foster parent. While SAM will attempt to see that the foster dog is compatible with the foster home, SAM does not warrant the foster animals temperament or behavior in any way. The foster home will also notify SAM immediately should any problems occur with the foster animal. (i.e. incompatibility, medical issues, behavioral changes, etc.) I agree Bites\*The foster home agrees that it will report to SAM any bite (whether inflicted on a human or another animal) within 12 hours of the incident. The foster home will abide by the decision of SAM as to the disposition of the rescue animal should a bite occur. The foster home will also provide a copy of the lease (if the property where the foster animal housed is rented) stating that the said foster family has permission from the landlord/leasing agent to house a foster animal of that said type. I agree Foster Failure\*SAM recognizes that sometimes foster families want to adopt their foster animal. With approval, foster families may adopt their charges. I agree Ownership\*The foster home may not give, lease, sell or otherwise transfer custody of the rescue animal to anyone while it is under the foster homes care. SAM will retain ownership of all foster dogs and will make final decisions (with the input of the foster home) regarding adoption or euthanization. The foster home also agrees that SAM may make visits to the foster home to check on the foster animal status. Should SAM decide that the foster animal requires any behavioral training or medical attention, the foster home agrees to abide by SAM’s decision(s) or return the animal.
